A new website, www.NotSoStraight.com.au has been officially launched in NSW to help young people find information and support on-line about sex and sexuality.
The Not So Straight website has been developed by the Mountains Youth Services Team (MYST) in partnership with the Aurora Foundation and provides an information gateway through which young people can safely and anonymously seek advice and information about sex and sexuality without being exposed to pornography.
The website was inspired by the Services and Resources for Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender Youth in the Blue Mountains report in 2007 that identified a number of barriers to gay, lesbian, bisexual, trans, intersex and queer youth accessing online support and information.
The report’s author, Raquel Lowe, found that while there were a number of valuable online support providers for young people, they are difficult to locate.
Search engines such as Google constantly list pornographic sites higher in their rankings than the desired support and information sites. The Not So Straight website has been developed in response to the recommendations of the Lowe report and is specifically designed to help young people find support services online as well as physical services such as clinics and phone support services.
The website can be found at www.NotSoStraight.com.au.
