PLWHA Weekly Lunches
PLWHA Blue Mountains have weekly luncheons which are held each Wednesday at 10 Station Street Katoomba from 12.30. You will find us next door to Katoomba Neighbourhood Centre, just down the street a few doors from our old premises.
Blue Mountains PLWHA Centre grew out of the Blue Mountains AIDS Task Force back in the early days of the epidemic. Due to strong lobbying on the part of one of the members of the Blue Mountains AIDS Task Force, Blue Mountains City Council provided premises at No 2 Station Street Katoomba around 1989. A management committee was established and the center became an incorporated association known as the Blue Mountains PLWHA Centre Inc.
At that time, the epidemic was at its peak. Three concerned volunteers helped establish a branch of Karuna (an emotional support group), and a Blue Mountains Community Support Network, which provided through its volunteers, a hands on service to HIV positive persons in their homes.
The center provided lunches on Wednesdays and an evening meal on Fridays at a nominal cost. These events were very useful for members to meet in a non judgmental and safe atmosphere. They were also very useful in terms of access to informal peer support, which was extremely important at that time in view of negative community attitudes.
Due to very strong fundraising efforts by the center and supportive members of the community, a financial assistance account was established which provided much needed help to the HIV positive community. Unfortunately due to changed circumstances the center is not in a position to provide this type of assistance any longer.
In mid 2008 the center moved to new premises at number 10 Station Street, Katoomba, we still provide lunches on Wednesdays for a nominal cost, and in the summer months we will be looking at having an evening meal on Fridays.
