A new monthly film night for LGBTIQ people will kick off on Saturday, September 12 at Katoomba’s iconic Carrington Hotel.

The Alphabet Soup Cinema will screen a different film each month, giving locals and visitors the chance to watch queer classics and new movies in Katoomba’s grande dame of hotels.

The opening night film will be a special 21st anniversary screening of Australian cult classic The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.

Alphabet Soup Cinema convenor Peter Hackney – who is also co-convenor of Pink Mountains, alongside Kevin Hardwick – said Priscilla was the perfect film to kick off with.

“It’s a fun, feel-good movie that really lends itself to celebration,” Peter said. “The fact that Priscilla turns 21 in September and we’re starting in September makes it the perfect fit.

“It’s also the kind of film that stands up to repeated viewings. Like The Rocky Horror Picture Show or The Sound of Music, it’s one of those escapist films people can watch time and time again.”

Peter added that there was more to the Alphabet Soup Cinema than the films themselves.

“Of course, movies are the centrepiece – but it’s also about community-building and providing another social outlet for local LGBTIQ people,” he said.

“We’re encouraging people to come early or stay afterwards and have a drink with other patrons in the Carrington’s cocktail bar (Champagne Charlie’s). It’s just down the hall from The Library function room, where the films will be screened.

“Having said that, it’s perfectly fine if people just want to come for the films only.”

Seating up to 50 people in theatre mode, The Library is one of The Carrington’s most beautiful and opulent spaces, with warmly panelled wood, plush red drapes and an open fireplace.

Tickets to opening night will include your seat in the function room, a complimentary glass of bubbly (choice of sparkling wine or mineral water), and access to complimentary cheese boards and snacks – all for just $10 General Admission or $5 Concession.

Further drinks and snacks will be available for purchase.

Special guest hosts, local drag identities Martina Concepta and Petra Dish, will be on hand throughout the evening – while the fabulous Councillor Romola Hollywood from the Blue Mountains City Council will officially open the event.
